Lomi’s Electric Kitchen Composter Turns Food Scraps into Dirt Overnight—But Is It Worth The Hype?

You might be an environmentalist, a home gardener or just a conscious consumer who wants to reduce your carbon footprint. Perhaps you have a compost pile in your backyard or a compost tumblr. The Lomi countertop composter is a smart gadget that may be perfect for you if you haven't explored the subject of composting yet.

It used to be difficult and expensive to compost food scraps. It can be messy, smelly, attract rodents and require outdoor space that isn't available to many. Many people are drawn to compost piles, but they don't suit their needs.

We live in an age of technological innovation. This means that even when it is difficult, there are almost always ways to make it easier.

For a moment, imagine that you are making soup in your kitchen and you just need to put the leftovers in a container on your counter. You go to sleep at night by pressing a single button. You wake up the next morning to find your food waste transformed into dirt.

It sounds too good to be true!

It was actually who had this dream and made it a reality. Meet: Lomi. This composter is the perfect solution for people who are busy, dirt-averse, or those without a backyard. A home composter makes it easy to start composting.

Composting 101

Most people recycle cardboard packaging, aluminum cans, and glass bottles. It's now second nature for most people.

You might have heard of compost but not sure what it is. It's very simple, don't worry! While compost is a natural part of the lives of wild animals and plants, it could do with a little more human help. Here is a brief overview of the basics.

What is compost?

Compost is soil that has been made from organic matter such as grass clippings and table scraps. It's then transformed into nutrient rich fertilizer by bacteria, fungi and/or worms. It looks like dirt and is ready to be returned to the earth.

Why is composting important?

Some refer to compost as "black gold", but it is much more valuable than its parts. It is especially impressive when you consider that compost starts with trash. It is a smart investment! Here's why.

Reduce food waste

You don't have to join the clean plates club. However, that doesn't mean you should throw away your last bites. After you have finished your meal, composting will ensure that all of your food goes to good use and feeds the planet.

Water conservation

Healthy soil requires less water and yields higher yields. The US's agriculture sector accounts for about 80% of water consumption. That's more than a drop in a bucket.

Reducing methane emissions

The only source of greenhouse gasses is not cow farts. Organic material that goes into landfills is buried with trash and cut off from oxygen. This leads to anaerobic degradation, which results in a biogas consisting of half methane and half carbon dioxide.

Improves soil quality.

It is almost a given that dirt is available anywhere and everywhere. It is not all soil the same and some soils aren't suitable for growing plants or maintaining life. Compost is high in nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. This makes it a valuable resource for both small-scale farming and home gardening. This soft, moist soil can retain water better, which helps to prevent erosion and drought.

No need to use chemical fertilizers.

Plants thrive when they are fed whole foods and healthy diets. Plants have a stronger immune system that can fight off pests. They also thrive in adverse conditions. Pesticides are not necessary.

There are many ways to compost

There is no one-size fits all approach to composting. You don't have to be afraid of trying different approaches until you find one that works for you and your family.

Municipal Compost

Many cities and towns now offer municipal compost pickup in addition to traditional trash and recycling services. Sign up and you can put food scraps, yard trimmings and natural fibers in a designated bin. Then, waste management will pick it up at the curb. If you sign up for a regular pickup, outdoor bins will often be provided at no charge. This makes it the most cost-effective and easiest way to start.

Although we hope that this will be possible one day, most people don’t have the means to dispose of their waste in a city-wide compost.

Home Compost (Outdoor)

Some counties have been slow to adopt the composting movement and are still behind in basic recycling. You don't have to start a program, and you can keep the rich compost you make for yourself.

  • Cold compost This is the simplest, but most time-consuming, way to make compost out of kitchen waste.
  • Hot compost In hot climates, especially during summer, warmer temperatures help speed up the process. Although you will need to stir the compost in outdoor containers often, it can be ready for use in as little time as three months.
  • Vermicompost You'll need to open an entire can of worms in order to get this one... Literally! The "red wigglers", which are available at most garden supply shops, can be purchased to digest your trash and create compost.

Electric Kitchen Countertop Compost Machines

Electric composters are the new fad. They can be placed on the kitchen counter, and they don't need any outdoor space or worms.

There are several electric composter brands, such as Vitamix or Reencle. More are on the way. Lomi is the most well-known brand.

The Lomi composter was created by Pela, a B-Corp that is well-known for its compostable phone cases. Yes, even their phone cases can be composted in Lomi! Technology is amazing.

Lomi was launched via an Indiegogo Kicstarter campaign. It raised $17.2 million from more than 19,000 backers and became one of the most successful campaigns ever. I was one of them.

Lomi Review (Why we Love The Lomi).

Lomi will dehydrate and pulverize all your scraps. This creates a small pile full of nutrients rich dirt that can then be used to make soil for more plants. It does all this without the usual "icky" factors like smells and insects that discourage people from traditional composting.

You can even toss in produce peels, food scraps and coffee grounds! It's genius.

Lomi, a countertop composter, takes the hassle out of making compost. It can break down nearly any organic material, even those that aren't suitable for cold composting like cardboard or bioplastics. You can get compostable material in just three hours by heating, aerating, and grinding your waste.

To best suit your needs, there are three Lomi settings:

  • Eco Express mode is the fastest, breaking down basic food scraps in as little as 3 to 5 hours.
  • Lomi Approved mode can be used for packing material and bioplastics. It runs for 5 to 8 hours.
  • Growmode runs for 16 to 20 hours and is for gardeners who want maximum nutrient content in their compost.

What Can You Put in the Compost Bin? What Can You Not Compost?

You can put anything you like in your electric compost, from coffee grounds to watermelon pulps. The only thing that matters is the only

What Can Do In Lomi?

  • Fruit and veggie scraps (rinds, peels, stems, grains, etc.)
  • Remaining food
  • Coffee grounds
  • Lawn trimmings and grass clippings
  • House plants
  • Lomi-approved bioplastics
  • Paper towels, paper and cardboard products

Some of my favourite things to put in the compost are banana peels and corn husks. I also love to throw in fruit cores, watermelon rinds, pineapple rinds, soiled papers towels, and compostable plastic bags.

What Shouldn’tGo in Lomi?

It is important to know what and you should compost. These items should be left out of your Lomi compost.

  • Too acidic orange and lemon peels
  • Onions can kill good microorganisms
  • Meat, fish and dairy products (according the EPA, composting meat scraps or dairy isn’t a good idea - another win for team plants!)
  • Oils and fatty foods that are very greasy (which can attract pests)
  • Pistachio shells and hard fruit pits take a while to disintegrate.

Is The Lomi Composter worth the hype?

Here are the top positive and negative points to consider if you are still unsure whether Lomi is the right home composter for you.

Lomi has many benefits

  • This machine is plug and play. It's easy enough to use for children of all ages! Simply close the lid and select the compost mode. Then press the button. You'll find compost when you return later!
  • It's very quiet. Let it run overnight. It will barely hum more than the refrigerator.
  • No smell. Standard kitchen trash can smell more than this fully enclosed container.
  • A small footprint. This is ideal for apartment dwellers who have limited counter space.
  • Multipurpose. You are able to compost almost any item in the Lomi, even items that don't break down in traditional compost. These plastic-like compostable spoons and forks can be put back in the earth, instead of being thrown away.

Considerations for Electric Composter

  • Price. An electric composter is a large upfront investment that is difficult to reach for many families.
  • A balanced mix of ingredients is essential for optimal fertilizer output. You'll soon learn how to make the best Lomi fertilizer. Lomi also has pods that can be used to increase efficiency and improve quality. You can even find specific products to help you make fertilizer that meets your specific needs (like lawn fertilizer).
  • It does not create traditional compost soil. Lomi is a soil-like material made from dehydrated and broken-down scraps. It looks almost like soil, but it is not as rich in compost soil. Before adding Lomi to your garden, it is necessary to mix the fertilizer with soil or dirt at a 1:10 ratio (1 part Lomi to 10 parts soil).
  • Filter must be replaced. If you use your Lomi filter regularly, it will need to replaced every few months.
  • It is not able to handle large loads at once. However, if you have a lot of organic food scrap in your home, the Lomi might be too tiny. Lomi is a team that has developed a larger model for professional kitchens and bigger families.

FAQs about Electric Home Composter

Are electric composters actually effective?

You bet! You can! The appliance is simple to use and transforms food scraps into fertilizer-like matter that you can add back into the soil. The quality of the product will depend on what materials are used and how long it takes to process them.

Is Lomi really a good idea?

Lomi is a wonderful tool! Lomi is like composting with wheels. It makes it easy to start your journey into home composting. It can be set and forgotten just like a slow cooker.

How long does Lomi need to compost?

Lomi will need to make compost from scratch in 3 hours using the shortest setting. However, it can take Lomi as much as 20 hours if she is running the most intense program.

What items can you place in Lomi?

It's a good idea to keep in mind the rhyme "if it grows it goes", but there is more to it. Organic food scraps such as carrot peels and onion skins, corn cobs and pineapple tops are all acceptable. Materials like napkins, used paper towels, and yard trimmings are all acceptable for the Lomi Approved Mode.

How much electricity can an electric composter consume?

Lomi consumes very little electricity, between 1 kWh and 0.60kWh depending on the cycle. The average dishwasher uses more than twice as much electricity for each cycle.

So...Are Electric Kitchen Composter Machines Worth It?

Yes! It all depends on your investment goals, your budget and what you are most interested in.

It's been a great experience in my home! I care deeply about the environment and throwing food scraps into the trash can was a way to eat at my soul. I am also a bug-phobic so I was concerned that I wouldn't have the time to maintain an outdoor compost pile. I put it off. Lomi was the best solution for me.

Lomi is for you if...

  • You want to compost, but you keep putting it off.
  • You are looking to live a more sustainable life.
  • Tossing food scraps in trash is a recipe for disaster.

Lomi isn't for you if...

  • An existing outdoor compost is available that can meet your needs.
  • Composting should be used to save money.
  • You generate a lot of organic waste each day (you can't wait to see their large model).

Although it's unlikely that you will be able to recover the cost of the machine and the maintenance required to produce compost, many people find this new method of composting worth the effort to reduce their carbon footprint and help the environment. It's also very satisfying, simple, and enjoyable!

Let's divert food waste from landfills and take better care of the one-and only planet Earth. Are you interested in composting with an electric kitchen-composter? Please share your experiences and leave your tips in our comments section!

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when I stop eating pork?

Your body will go through many changes if you quit eating meat. With the transition from animal to plant-based proteins such as legumes, beans, nuts, whole grains, and soy-based products, your diet may be higher in fiber and lower in saturated fat. This can help improve your heart health and digestive health. You may also notice an increase in energy due to a more efficient digestion and elimination of inflammatory food like animal proteins. The ability to reduce stress hormones caused by excessive animal protein consumption may make your moods more stable. Switching to a plant based diet is a popular way to fight environmental damage caused factory farming.

Is a diet based on plants the same as a vegan one?

A plant-based diet does not mean you have to eat vegan. A plant based diet is an eating pattern that focuses on whole grains, fruits and vegetables. This eating pattern typically eliminates or dramatically reduces the consumption of animal products such as meat or dairy, but small amounts of animal proteins may be included. Veganism on the other side is a ethical lifestyle choice. This involves eating only plant-based foods and avoiding animal products. While vegans might choose to eat a plant-based diet, these are two distinct concepts.

Is it possible to get enough protein from a plant-based diet.

Yes, you can get enough protein on a plant-based diet. A variety of legumes, grains, nuts, seeds, as well as grains provide amino acid to help you build muscle and stay healthy. Tofu, and other soybean products, contain all 9 essential amino acid that the body cannot make. Combining legumes and grains with vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, and kale can provide sufficient protein to ensure adequate nutrition. Plant-based proteins typically have lower saturated fat levels than animal proteins and are beneficial for supporting long-term satiety between meals. Other essential nutrients can also be balanced by adding omega-3 fats to plant-based foods like flaxseeds or chia seeds and walnuts.

How To

How do you ensure that your body gets enough protein when eating a plant-based diet

With the right combination, you can ensure that you have enough protein in a plant-based food. A variety of plant-based protein sources include nuts, legumes and seeds as well as tofu, tempeh and quinoa. These foods should be included into your daily diet. If you want to maximize your nutrition intake and still eat a vegan diet, you should consider superfoods like spinach and gojiberries. These superfoods are packed with vitamins, minerals, and contain high amounts of nutrients.

A vegan diet should include plant-based foods, such as protein powders, nuts, and collagen peptides. They can also be added to smoothies and other recipes. If you don’t feel like you’re getting enough protein by eating only plant-based proteins, then you should consider supplementation with high quality supplements. High-quality pills, capsules and tablets can provide you with the exact amount you need.

A vegan lifestyle allows them to quickly achieve their recommended daily nutrients by planning ahead and making conscious efforts in different ways to include plant-based proteins in their meals.
